What are these?

Can anyone tell me?

I'd like to see if I could make dye out of them, but it would be more interesting if I knew what kind of nuts they were....

    They look like weathered black walnuts in the photo but I would have to roll them around in my hand to be sure. The green husks of black walnuts work great for a rich brown dye but I have not tried weathered ones. - Steve H
